He was the perfect husband until his one mistake followed him home. |

| In the
tradition of Hitchcock's "Psycho," "What Lies Beneath" is a
frightening and effective thriller that uses a lengthy set-up and
misleading subplots to catch the audience off guard. Also like
"Psycho," it makes bathrooms no longer seem like innocent places to
relieve yourself, but places where your worst nightmares can come
true. Despite his top billing, Harrison Ford is only a supporting role
here. Michelle Pfeifer is the lead, and she has the class of a real
Hitchcock heroine. It's a marvelous performance by a veteran actress
who brings a real layer of reality to the absurd premise. Director
Robert Zemeckis has now directed comedies, animated films, science
fictions, dramas and thrillers and has excelled in all genres. He is
certainly among America's finest but most underappreciated directors |

I do agree
that Zemeckis is underrated as a director,
however, I found myself utterly bored with this
film. Unfortunately, if you saw the trailers
prior to viewing this film then there was no
element of suspense left in the film. What's a
thriller without suspense? Zemeckis is a tad
formulaic in his utilization of the basic
elements of suspense, and while both Ford and
Pfeiffer do a decent job it's basically for
nothing. Basically, the first half of the film
is a formulaic thriller. The second half of the
film is just plain pathetic.
