A
doe. A deer. A vicious half-man, half-deer.
While I
didn't care for this film at all, I can accept
that a certain segment of the population may
enjoy it to a certain degree (though anyone who
considers it award-winning cinema should have a
mental status check). The film stars Patricia
Clarkson (before she started to get serious
about film), Erik Per Sullivan and Jake Weber in
a sort of supernatural horror/thriller that
takes the stereotypical route into
predictability with a couple in a cabin that is
sort of "possessed" following an altercation
with a group of hunters...well, it's all rather
silly and centers around an evil spirit that is
half man/half deer. I wonder how often his wife
says "I love you, Dear/Deer?"
Yes, it's true...these sorts of comic lines were
bouncing throughout my head during the entire
film. This alone says the film didn't hold my
attention.
The film won the Maverick Award at the Woodstock
Film Festival, and is a fair effort from
writer/director Larry Fessenden, who also
brought us such efforts as "Chinatown" and has
acted in his fair share of films, too.
The film was close to "straight to video," but
found enough video success to warrant a sequel
in 2002. "Wendigo" is definitely not a film that
connected with me at all, but fans of
supernatural horror/thriller types of films may
find it watchable.
