The
film with as much personality as John Kerry's
presidential campaign!
This is a
pretty much sterile comedy featuring comedian
Ray Romano, Gene Hackman, Christine Baranski and
Marcia Gay Harden among others...It becomes
fairly clear with this film that Romano is not
leading man material...he's perfectly fine and
funny during a 30 minute sitcom, but not nearly
solid enough as an actor to carry a film.
This film needed a bit more than Romano had to
offer to become even remotely interesting...In
terms of comedic timing, Romano is fine...but
when the time came to show emotions, he simply
isn't able to project it onscreen. Hackman, who
can be simply incredible, isn't given much to
work with here but does the best he can with a
fairly one-note role as the former President who
runs for Mayor.
The only one who appears to cut loose at all is
Baranski, and I've seen Baranski enough to know
that this is really just another typical role
for her.
So, basically, when all is said and done we have
a lightweight comedy with nothing special to
offer...it's far from a difficult film to view
but there's much better out there. If you're a
major Romano fan just watch "Everybody Loves
Raymond."
