Shouldn't the plans include a decent film?
This film is
at a tremendous disadvantage with me. I can't
stand Jennifer Lopez, and while I like Matthew
McConaughey I am seldom impressed by his films.
In short, the two leading performances here left
me not looking forward to this film at all.
Still, I tried...somewhat objectively, to give
it a chance. Adam Shankman, who directed,
brought us "A Walk to Remember" and "Bringing
Down the House." Both films, while lightweight,
were reasonable entertaining. This film,
however, just never works for me at all. I admit
it...I can't get past the Jennifer Lopez
bias...I've just never bought into her as an
actress. She's truly a merely average one here.
McConaughey has a certain charm to him, and does
have an interesting chemistry with Lopez...but
is stuck with a lifeless script. Shankman's
direction is fairly run-of-the-mill...in short,
there's little original or special here. Judy
Greer, Kevin Pollak and Joanna Gleason give
supporting roles a nice touch here...but, this
film is a below average, lightweight comedy at
best. Lopez fans, I'm sure, will want to see
it...but I can't fathom a decent reason to do
so.
