This
film gets off the ground... but only just.
The
only real excuse to watch this fluffy romantic
comedy is to see Gwyneth prance around, being
bubbly and charming, while wearing skimpy pink
and yellow and orange outfits.
Let's face it though... that's a pretty damn
good excuse!
Paltrow plays a small town girl who dreams of a
successful career which will take her as far
away from home as possible. Her ticket to
achieving that goal is to become a flight
attendant. The story follows her from a crummy
first job, to stewardess school, back to another
crappy assignment, and ultimately, to an
inevitable happy ending.
The script is a little thin... it feels like a
one hour movie stretched into ninety minutes.
Most of the jokes will generate smiles and
chuckles, but there aren't too many belly
laughs. Ultimately it is the performance of
Gwyneth Paltrow that makes or breaks this film
and she does a wonderful job with it. She is the
kind of actress whose mere appearance on screen
is enough to make you smile and feel good... she
is perfect in this type of role.
There isn't much more to be said about this
silly little comedy... it is a cute slice of
entertainment that will brighten your day. I can
easily recommend it.

Admit it.
When you saw this film advertised, you cringed.
It even sounds like a bad idea. I mean,
seriously, a film about stewardesses? a "period"
film about stewardesses? You must be kidding.
The idea sounds horrid, but the film works much
more than expected thanks to the willingness of
Gwyneth Paltrow to simply "go for it" in a role
that doesn't begin to capitalize on her immense
talent. The film is easygoing and comfy enough
to make you smile, and sure won't challenge your
thought processes at all. I'll admit that I
enjoyed seeing Christina Applegate here, as
well. She's an under-utilized actress who seems
to be making better choices these days.
