"Hell
of a thing, killin' a man."
As directed
by Clint Eastwood, this film is one of the best
Westerns to come across in recent years. It
features an Oscar nominated performance by
Eastwood and an Oscar winning performance by
Gene Hackman, along with supporting appearances
by Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris and Frances
Fisher.
The film itself captured the Best Picture
Oscar...a bit surprising to me, even though I
enjoy the film quite a lot.
"Unforgiven" is a dark, emotional film that
spends a lot of time in the gray area...there
are no real good guys or bad guys...in the end
we all end up damaged by the killing we do
amongst ourselves. The cinematography is
beautiful here, along with the set design and
sound.
The film is a bit uneven at times, and I felt
like Richard Harris and Morgan Freeman both
suffered from under-developed roles. These are
relatively minor quibbles for a film that is a
true Western classic.

As gritty
and emotionally raw a Western as you are ever
like to see, this Clint Eastwood Oscar winner is
a sure-fire hit for all fans of the genre.
