Ultra-cheap...

"Ultraviolet" is a video game / music video combination rip-off of "Underworld" and "Resident Evil" laced with dismal & choppy special effects that look like they were done in the eighties.

Milla Jovovich is a supermodel turned actress who I think has been given a raw deal along the way. She is capable of far more than this tripe. She was very respectable in "The Fifth Element", "The Claim", "No Good Deed" & even pulled off a thankless task in the "Resident Evil" movies. She has the talent to be more than just a futuristic action starlet.

However, in "Ultraviolet", Milla is stuck posing in overly dramatic scenes that are not earned by the silly screenplay. Her fight scenes are numerous and repetitive. Her lines are quippy blurbs that have no real nuance or depth at any point during the relatively short running length.

The film opens with Violet stealing a biological weapon from humans who intend to kill the hemophages. Hey!!! Stop Laughing!!! This is Serious Business!!! After delivering it to her own kind, she realizes that they are going to destroy the weapon. But there is a problem... the weapon is a child. And with Violet's history of having lost a child due to a forced pregnancy earlier in life, she is compelled to defend the child from virtually everyone.

The film alternates routine effects-laden fight sequences with quiet deliveries of melodramatic speeches and supposedly powerful declarations of intent which substitute for exposition.

The film has a few things going for it... A fast pace and some ab-worshipping costumes for Milla Jovovich. It also has such a ludicrous premise which is hard for critics to poke holes in, based simply on the fact that it would be farcical to take any of it seriously. That being said, audiences should note that the studio heads who released this film had such little faith in the end product that they flatly refused it to be screened in advance. No doubt, they feared that the inevitable critical panning would result in an even worse opening weekend at the box office than it will ultimately get.

This film should be skipped by everyone... even fans of the genre. In fact, the only genre of film that "Ultraviolet" belongs to is the 'bad movie genre'. If you are fan of those, then by all means see this film now!

Richard Propes' Comment

I enjoyed Milla enough here to give the film a slightly higher rating, however, I can easily say "Agreed" when it comes to TC's review.
