"Tombstone" is a great western, buoyed by an excellent lead
performance by Kurt Russell and a director who understands the nature
of the genre. This is the story of Wyatt Earp without all of the
Hollywood frills: it is a gritty, violent, true to life film that
never romanticizes cowboys and outlaws, but projects them as simple,
flawed men. Unlike so many others in the genre, "Tombstone" takes its
time setting up the characters, so when violence strikes, it hits home
and you actually feel it. Also worthy of note is Val Kilmer as Doc
Holiday. It is a truly remarkable performance that should've won
Kilmer a Best Supporting Actor Statue. |

TC Candler's Comment
One of the
best westerns I've ever seen, this film contains
one of the most underrated performances of all
time with Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. He
deserved the Oscar for best supporting actor but
didn't get it because this film probably felt
too much like pure entertainment than real drama
for Academy voters.
The chemistry
between the iconic Kurt Russell, in a role he
seems born to play, and the delicious Dana
Delaney is electric. The only thing that
drops this film a tiny notch is the slightly
cartoonish portrayals of the villains.
However, this
great film is endlessly rewatchable and
entertaining... an entirely satisfying film
experience.
Richard Propes' Comment
I enjoyed the cast assembled
here, but I just found this film a bit boring at
times. The cast includes Val Kilmer, Kurt
Russell, Sam Elliott and Bill Paxton. In
supporting roles, you find the likes of Powers
Boothe, Michael Biehn, Charlton Heston, Jason
Priestley, Dana Delany and Thomas Haden Church.
Definitely a workable cast assembled here...but,
something just doesn't feel right with this
film. Still, the scenery is great and the lead
performances are pretty strong. Definitely worth
a rental, especially for Western fans.
