This is a massacre, alright!

I wanted to love this film, and I question whether or not I'm judging it on the basis of the original...a classic in my eyes.

First off, this cast simply isn't as strong as the original, and the cinematography doesn't have the atmosphere and mood that the original possessed. At times, it appeared so choppy that it destroyed the sense of suspense or fear.

Additionally, I simply found this film too often going for laughs instead of for horror. Directed by Marcus Nispel and based on Tobe Hooper's original script, the film simply never terrified me and seldom scared me.

It certainly grossed me out at times, with an ample supply of blood. Yet, here I am a person who seldom watches horror films and I very seldom needed to turn away and very seldom experienced any anxiety while watching this film.

The cast includes Jessica Biel and Eric Balfour, and both come off as shallow, boring characters. Even their screams don't ring as true.

R.Lee Ermey, who I ordinarily love, goes over the top as the sheriff and Andrew Bryniarski brings nothing unique to the role of Leatherface. I semi enjoyed David Dorfman as Jedidiah, however, his role is minimal and doesn't allow him to fully explore the character. There are changes from the original, which also hurts the impact of the film.

Overall, this is a "slightly" below average horror film that should have been much better.
