| Morgan Freeman plays
an ever-so-slightly washed up actor, who everyone recognizes from
that one Ashley Judd movie, researching a role for a small
independent project that he is considering. The movie would be
a comeback of sorts, as he has not made a film in four years. That
research takes him to a grocery store in an undesirable Los Angeles
neighborhood. He ambles through the store, taking mental
notes. Clearly, he hasn't done his own grocery shopping in a
long time. Eventually, he makes his way to the check out
counter -- the 10 items or less lane.
Furiously tapping away on the register, chastising patrons for
pushing the 10 items rule, is Scarlet -- the sassy check out girl
who does more work than all of the other employees put together.
He is fascinated by her... The mannerisms... The attitude... The
fire within.
Soon, they strike up a conversation which carries the bulk of the
film. "10 Items or Less" is a two character play that follows
the couple as they traipse through L.A. on various errands.
Scarlet is desperate for a better job and has an interview for a
secretarial position at a construction company. Unfortunately,
she is nervous, insecure and unprepared. However, with the
help of her new friend, she is able to get her act together in
double-time. They shop for a new blouse. They visit the
car wash. They rehearse her "lines" for the interview /
audition.
The entire day develops into a special connection between two
very different people. One is a pampered actor with incredible
people skills, but no grasp on the mundane reality of the day to day
lives of most people. The other is a hard working, tough
talking check out girl with no confidence and no people skills.
Both actors are tremendous here. Morgan Freeman almost
lampoons himself in the role -- one gets the feeling that much of
the character is based on personal experience. The part is
written superbly well by Brad Silberling, who also directs the film
with a casual and relaxed style that makes it a tremendously easy
watch.
Paz Vega is one of my very favorite actresses... She has been
electric in every movie I have seen her in. Even here, acting
in one of her many second languages, she is able to create a
charming and passionate character who is easy to root for and care
about. I wanted Scarlet to have more confidence. I
wanted her to have an easier time with life.
"10 Items or Less" is a quirky little conversation piece that
will win over most viewers in the audience. The acting is
pitch perfect and the writing is authentic. Wrapped up with a
strong ending, this is one of the 20 best films of 2006. It is
an 82 minute gem with wit and insight into a fascinating human
connection. |
