He was trained to follow orders. He became a hero by defying them. |

The
biggest problem with war films has always been characterization. Take
for example, "Black Hawk Down." With the exception of Josh Hartnett, I
could never put a name to a face or distinguish between personalities
once the helmets were strapped on. This tradition continues with
"Tears of the Sun."
The story involves a group of Navy SEALS sent in to an African country
to rescue a doctor caught in the middle of a rebellion. She refuses to
leave her refugees behind, so the soldiers trick her by saying they'll
save them when they really won't. Naturally, there is a sudden change
of heart, and soon our eight soldiers are fighting a giant rebel army.
Yeeeaahhh...
Complaint Number One: Take what I said at the beginning of the review
and multiply it by ten. Honestly, I never figured out the main
character's name, so I never learned any of the supporting cast. Even
in the climax I was wondering who was who.
Complaint Number Two: the direction, acting, action, special effects,
and story are all very average. Nothing special at all, just cliche
pie.
Complaint Number Three: most modern war movies take the effort to be
realistic. Not this. Our highly trained commandos hold there rifles at
their waists during many of the gunfights. Believe me, anyone who does
this in combat will be cut down so fast, they won't even know what hit
them.
In the end, I cannot say I learned very much from this movie.
Lessons Learned: Some Africans are harmless, others
murdering-rapist-terrorist guys; the United States Navy is made up of
Arnold Schwarzenegger rejects that have been painted with a fine
mixture of cliche and bad acting; and that even if no chemistry exists
between a man and woman on screen, they will still fall in love. |
