Brothers stick together. |

Not
being a fan of the Farrelly brothers or their brand of humor, I
approached "Stuck one You" with caution. It had all the signs of the
typical Farrelly film: outrageous plot, bizarre gags, and sexual
jokes. I was somewhat pleased to see that these have been downplayed
in this movie. At the same time though, the film loses all humor,
tasteful or not.
The story follows two conjoined brothers, Bob (Matt Damon) and Walt
(Greg Kinnear) who live happily in a small Massachusetts town. Despite
the birth defect, they are very popular and run a successful burger
joint. Despite this, Walt wants to be an actor. So they trek to
Hollywood, where they get in many misadventures.
The highlight of "Stuck on You" is the acting. Although the brothers
have never really coaxed a good performance out of an actor before,
they do so here. Damon presents an aura of dumb lovability and Kinnear
(one of my favorites) is dead-on perfect as the aspiring brother. The
supporting cast is okay as well, with Cher playing herself in an
important supporting role. There are several amusing cameos including
Jay Leno, Frankie Muniz and Meryl Streep (yes THE Meryl Streep, I
wonder how much they paid her).
The performers may be game, but the script is weak. The Farrelly
Brothers have cut down on their trademark gross-out humor and have
replaced it with gentle off-color humor and sweet sappiness.
I would normally like to see the cut down of gross out gags, but here,
it just makes the movie not funny. While I smiled and grinned at
several funny lines and scenes, I never laughed out loud. It just was
not funny. Even Meryl Streep's (yes, once again THE Meryl Streep)
extended cameo loses it's juice about halfway through itself.
"Stuck on You" is not a good movie, but if you have a free evening,
the characters and acting are likable and fun, even if the story is
not. |

TC Candler's Comment
A one-joke
film that has its moments but falls flat for far
too long in parts. The lead performances
are both fine but the rest of the cast is pretty
dismal.
Richard Propes' Comment
Overall, this film doesn't suck but it's a
tremendously missed opportunity. Having grown up
with tremendous physical challenges, I know that
my life is ripe with comic potential...potential
that came to life in the dark comedy "Pumpkin"
but is left completely unexplored here. Unless
you have a Siamese twin, there's really no big
reason to check out this film.
