...all it takes is a little Confidence! |

Funny,
engaging, and very clever, but by no means a masterpiece. It's 7 Oscar
wins (including Best Picture) continues to induce head scratching on
my part. I still recommend it because it's a flat out fun movie.
Paul Newman and Robert Redford are con artists whose friend is killed
by the film's villain (Robert Shaw). To get revenge, they assemble a
team and plan the con of a lifetime. Twists and turns abound.
I have no real complaints with this film, but it's too light to make a
real impact. Well acted (especially by Newman), and the final scene is
fantastic (and was cleverly satired by an episode of "King of the
Hill"). It's very good viewing for pre-teens and their parents because
of the very cool elements, but safe because there is nothing really
offensive.
I still think the best film about con artists was 2003's "Matchstick
Men." |

Richard Propes' Comment
This film, featuring Robert Redford and Paul
Newman, is cleverly written, wonderfully
directed and acted masterfully. With a wonderful
accompanying musical score by Marvin Hamlisch,
this is one of the few films that I find
entertaining on every level.
