A Worthy Chapter

The sheer joy experienced by movie goers 20 years ago must be impossible to comprehend. They got to see this for the first time in theaters. Wow.

There are several reasons why "The Empire Strikes Back" is far superior to any of the other "Star Wars" movies. I will list them in no apparent order:

1. George Lucas has producer credit, but nothing more. This was written and directed by other people. People who actually know how to make films! People who know how to write realistic characters and dialogue. People who know how create a truly powerful situation on film!

2. The technical aspects have been improved. The groundbreaking effects have only gotten better.

3. The entire atmosphere has changed drastically. Rather then the light, fun feeling of the first outing, this one goes dark. Extreme attention is paid to Darth Vader and the evil Empire. The way they are presented is chilling. Darth Vader is still a badass, but he's not a one-dimensional badass. He's the type of villain every movie needs, he almost becomes a Hannibal Lecter villain (in terms of how powerful it is). Our heroes are no longer invincible warriors. They have doubts, they have failures, and they run and hide more often than fight. The battle sequences are also darker and more dramatic. Several subplots work extremely well, Billy Dee Williams' new character Lando is a great addition, and the entire Jedi system is worked out and it brings a sense of samurai honor to the Jedi.

A classic film. It's also one of the few classics to live up to what has been said about it.
