Morose beyond belief...
This
is the kind of film you can greatly admire, but
never really feel the need to see more than
once. Ralph Fiennes delivers an astonishingly
brave performance as a man trying to piece his
life back together after his release from a
mental institution. It is clear that he should
never have left. We watch as he slowly unravels
the mystery of his past to a shocking
conclusion.
I respect the craft it must have taken to make
such a film. The acting is top notch and the
direction is virtually masterful. But the film
is just so morose and dreary and slow, that I
felt it became a chore to sit through. As a
result, I cannot, in good conscience, recommend
this film to the average schmo. However, true
film buffs and art house lovers will likely want
to check it out... it may appeal to some of you.
At the very least, you will respect the effort.

"Spider"
appeals to my love of dark, emotional films that
question human existence and examine those
places within us that are often best left
unseen. Ralph Fiennes delivers a stunning,
emotionally vulnerable performance as a man
leaving a mental institution and trying to put
his life back together. "Spider" is
uncomfortable, dark, painful and utterly
hopeless. While this is certainly not
Cronenberg's best work, it's certainly one of
his most emotionally resonant.
