-- You Are a Total And Utter G-E-E-K!
This
is a reasonably entertaining documentary about
the National Spelling Bee. It follows eight
young kids who are generally obsessed with
winning this competition. Some of them are
driven to it by their overbearing parents, some
are self-motivated, some are rather aloof... and
one of them, Harry, is a psychopath-in-training
who may be the most irritating human being that
has ever walked the face of the earth. Emily
Stagg is the most entertaining of the students
and it was fun rooting for her to do well. A few
of the other kids were charming but were too
timid to be compelling. This was a good film
with a surprisingly exciting ending... a solid
thumbs-up here.

Propes' Comment
"Spellbound" should have put me in seventh
heaven. I'm an old junior high/high school
spelling geek, a spelling bee champion myself,
and I still tell people about it over 25 years
later. Yet, as fascinating as I found this
documentary following eight students trying to
win the 1999 National Spelling Bee, I found
myself equally irritated by the children, the
parents, and the tone of the film in general.
Watching "Spellbound" made me glad that I only
won the county spelling bee!
