Does
everyone have a someone?
"Sleepless in
Seattle" is a pleasant little movie starring Tom
Hanks and Meg Ryan. Their chemistry is, perhaps,
the best thing going for this film. It's a
chemistry I fell in love with during "Joe Vs.
The Volcano."
Hanks portrays Sam Baldwin, a new widow...and
Ryan is Annie, a woman who hears about Sam when
Sam's son calls into a radio show. Annie is
engaged to Walter, played by Bill Pullman.
First off, I enjoy this sort of film. It's
light, it's fluffy, it's far from award-winning
cinema...but, generally the message is upbeat,
the atmosphere fun and loving. So, when I'm
feeling depressed this is the sort of film
that's a joy to watch. Hanks and Ryan are both
engaging...have a good sense of this film's
romanticism and comic nature.
However, I seem to always have issues when a
film is written/directed by Nora Ephron. With
only a couple of exceptions, I always find her
dialogue to be a bit stilted. Fortunately, she
has a strong cast here that can overcome the
issue. Additionally, the supporting players here
are quite fun including David Hyde Pierce, Rosie
O'Donnell, Rita Wilson, Dana Ivey, Rob Reiner
and many others. My only complaint really
cast-wise is with child actor Ross
Malinger...his performance was fairly weak among
a bunch of comic heavyweights. It was pretty
noticeable.
This film is a nice, romantic film that has
plenty within it to entertain, amuse and inspire
you. It's not the best work of any of the cast,
but it's more than worth a rental.
