| "The
Silence of the Lambs" is a rare thriller that only gets better with
age. Jodie Foster's performance as FBI agent Clarice Starling is still
a wonderful piece; remarkably underplayed, never trying to create a
grand moment, but an even character who is easy to respect and
believe. Equally good, but more famous is Anthony Hopkins as Dr.
Hannibal Lecter, the psychotic cannibal who just so happens to be a
charming, witty, genius. The story of these two people, and the murder
case Clarice is trying to solve, is one of the most disturbing but
thoroughly engrossing in the history of movies. It is rare to find a
thriller of this magnitude, especially one that feels like it has been
directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Jonathan Demme directs with a strong
sense of style, but he never lets it overshadow his two leads, who
steal the show. |
