A comedy about the greatest love story almost never told! |
| |
Although an enjoyable and entertaining movie, "Shakespeare in Love"
was not worthy of seven Oscars, and should not have even had a
nomination for Best Picture. It's really just a period romantic
comedy.
It stars Joseph Fiennes as a young William Shakespeare, who is
struggling to write a play and pay his bills. Things get complicated
when he falls in love with a noble woman (Gwyneth Paltrow) who wants
to act, despite the fact that it is against the law.
Being a follower of Shakespeare and rather learned in the time period,
I was amazed at the accuracy. The costumes, the production design, and
overall design of the film is spectacular. I can't say the same for
the plot, which is romantic comedy value. Fiennes, and Geoffrey Rush
are great, but Gwyneth Paltrow was average, and did not deserve an
academy award.
"Saving Private Ryan" was the best film of the year and is one of my
all-time favorites, so whenever I think about how this stole best
picture from it, I hate it even more. The academy should not concern
what I think of the movie, but it's a subconscious thing.
Right now, I can recommend it as a rental, but little more. |

Doesn't it
freak anyone out that we all three agree on this
film? This may be further proof that Shakespeare
could save the world and create world peace. I'm
still completely floored this film won a "Best
Picture" Oscar. Good film, but nowhere near a
Best Picture.
