TC Candler's Review

Forgettable popcorn entertainment...

The Rock is to The Scorpion King as Arnold was to Conan the Barbarian. It is an initial foray into the world of filmmaking that will lead to bigger and better things as he inevitably becomes the preeminent action star of the next decade. As for this film... no surprises whatsoever in a standard action flick with a nonsensical plot, dull special effects and tons of fights and explosions. There are some funny one liners and decent action sequences but it isn't worth spending any money on.

Richard Propes' Comment

What is it about The Rock that makes me smile? I can't help it. I find him amusing. This film is a perfect vehicle for his limited acting range. It combines a little bit of acting, a lot of action, and some general silliness. Everything here is predictable, but it makes fairly decent eye-candy. It helps that The Rock is clearly having fun here, and gets in a few one-liners. Having a rainy Saturday afternoon? This is your flick...mindless fun that will make you smile.

Jacob Hall's Comment

The Rock seems to be following the same path as Arnold S.

Dwayne Johnson stars as the hero of the title, a warrior who defeats the enemy through brute strength. It's very similar to Arnold's first big film, "Conan the Barbarian."

It also features the 1980s sword and sorcery cliches. The musclebound hero, the helpless heroine, the little orphaned kid, the crazy old man, and the former rival who becomes an ally.

Still fun, but I can't stomach the thought of giving it a B. The Rock's next film, "The Rundown," is far more fun.

The filmmakers also forget to explain how our hero becomes the magical villain of "The Mummy Returns."
