Richard Propes' Review

B+

Jack Black is simply tenacious!

This film is ending up on the edge of my Top 100, and may yet go a bit higher. It's a wonderful vehicle for Jack Black, and I found myself continuously impressed with his performance here. Black spoke in interviews about the more sensitive parts in this film, and I found myself surprised with how well he pulled these scenes off. I'm also a huge Joan Cusack fan, and this served as a nearly perfect role for her, especially in the latter half of the film. The kids are solid, especially in terms of musical talent. I was occasionally bothered by what appeared monotone performances from the kids...yes, I know they are young performers...and, I actually felt the problem was more in the script than in the performances. I wanted a bit more range. It's a minor quibble, but keeps me from giving the film a solid "A". Sarah Silverman once again does a nice job as a "bitch," and the supporting cast was uniformly good. The film has a killer soundtrack, a feel good but not hokey ending and solid cinematography. As directed by Richard Linklater, I found this film to be wonderfully entertaining, funny and genuinely a good film for the whole family.

TC Candler's Comment

I am tired of Jack Black's one note schtick.  He has no other strings to his bow.
