Richard Propes' Review

D

I give it a scarlet letter "D!"

Dependably bad Demi Moore maintains that reputation here, and dependably good Robert Duvall is surprisingly a disappointment.

This film, based (though somewhat loosely) on Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, is a disappointment and one can't help but wonder why this needed to be made. Were we supposed to see proof of Moore's "acting" ability? Well, we didn't. Gary Oldman, however, did do a fairly nice job in the role of Rev. Dimmesdale...definitely not his usual type of role, but he carried it out nicely.

The set design was well done, and generally the atmosphere hit the film. The typical gratuitous Demi nude shot was out of place and distracting, and the film took liberties with the book. The film also feels too long, at 134 minutes. The supporting cast is competent. I'd recommend seeing the stage version.
