My only love sprung from my only hate. |

Perhaps
I'm being generous, but I liked "Romeo and Juliet." I am a follower of
Shakespeare and I believe he is the father of modern storytelling.
therefore, everything with his name on it tends to have at least some
quality.
This version updates the classic play. The Montagues and Capulets are
no longer rival families, but corporations. Swords are now replaced by
firearms. Despite this, the speech is is Shakespearean. It's all
rather interesting. Therefore, it's unfortunate that many of the
performances are average high-schooler at best. As my drama teacher
Mr. A would say: "There is one thing worse than bad college
theater...most high school theater." But "Romeo and Juliet" escapes
from being bad high school by being directed with some real style and
appreciation for the material by Baz Luhrmann. Also, seasoned actor
Peter Postlethwaite is no stranger to Shakespeare and delivers his
lines very well.
In the end, this is a great film for lovers of the master, but it will
be way too weird for most mainstream viewers. |
