Don't Peek!!!
For
all of it's loopholes and unexplained plot
threads, this film still managed to scare the
crap out of me. I almost broke the armrests off
my theatre chair gripping them so tightly and
jumping so forcefully. Verbinski has directed a
masterful film whose final thirty minutes may be
the most terrifying half an hour since the last
of Hitchcock's efforts. This film is not for the
faint of heart... I am a very experienced
moviegoer, not easily scared, but The Ring
almost made me piss my pants!!!
Naomi Watts is everything in this film. Her
magnificent performance drives the story and
creates most of the tension. She is a Hitchcock
blonde with deep thoughtful eyes that can convey
powerful emotions in a single glance. Couple
this effort with a master turn in last year's
Mulholland Drive and she is fast becoming one of
the best actresses in Hollywood.
Like The Sixth Sense & The Blair Witch Project,
this film will capture it's audience and scare
the heck out of them.

Propes' Comment
I honestly
don't see what all the fuss is here. Sure, "The
Ring" has a few creepy moments, a few
scares...but, ultimately, it's a disconnected,
uneventful and predictable film with average
scares, average acting, and a pretty darn boring
script. I don't recall a single moment of true
fear in this film, and I'm fairly easily freaked
out. Watts? She does the best she can here, but
this role is way beneath her.

Hall's Comment
I've heard "The Ring" called the scariest movie
since "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre." No,
actually, that title would go to "28 Days
Later." Despite this, "The Ring" is still a
chilling and well made horror film.
The story revolves around a cursed videotape
that causes anyone who watches it to die within
seven days. Naomi Watts (showing some true star
potential) is the reporter who investigates it.
Some truly creepy moments (especially when we
actually see the videotape), but disjointed. The
scares are a hit and miss affair.
Still a must see for horror fans.
