TC Candler's Review

A+

The deftest of love stories...

Jean Reno and Natalie Portman, in her first major role, are spectacular together as the most bizarre couple in film history. This is required viewing for all film lovers.

I love this film.  It has grown on me over the years to such an extent that it now resides safely in my Top 100.

Every time I think about this film it gets exponentially better. It is a love story between a weary hit man, who has never had anyone care about him, and a young girl, whose family is a waste of human life. Together they find caring and meaning, all the while trying to avoid being killed by a rogue D.E.A. officer. This is a bizarrely touching film. 'The Professional' is one of the very best films of the 1990's.

Richard Propes' Comment

This film features excellent performances by Jean Reno in the title role, Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman (surprised me) and Danny Aiello. Written and directed by Luc Besson, this action drama has a definite European feel to it and has an airtight script. It's not as satisfying in the direction, with occasional pacing problems and questionable action. These concerns are minor, however, thanks to the script and the performances. The nuances in the film are interesting interpretations, however, they don't always contribute well to the plot. Overall, it's definitely worth a watch.
