You
are not primed for this ride...
When
a movie about time travel contains the line,
"Man are you hungry? I haven't eaten since later
this afternoon.", you can be pretty sure that
you are in for an inventive and original ride
supported by a terrifically witty and
intelligent screenplay.
"Primer" is relentlessly fascinating and
puzzling. It is a brain exercise along the lines
of "Memento", "Mulholland Drive" & "Vanilla
Sky".
On a minimal budget, this film looks and feels
very much like a Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a
Dream, Pi) effort.
The film succeeds in large part due to its
ability to make the unexplainable and illogical
sound perfectly reasonable. I had no problem
whatsoever with my suspension of disbelief.
Most films that deal with time travel in any way
shape or form are highly ludicrous and just have
to be enjoyed for what they usually are...
popcorn entertainment.
However, "Primer" manages to make the topic a
legitimate conversation piece.
If there is a major flaw, it is in the
resolution of the film... There really isn't
one. It just fizzles out. There is no climax, no
destination, no revelation of truth or clarity.
I was disappointed to find that I couldn't
answer the question that I always like to ask
about a film... Why was it made?
But nonetheless, I found "Primer" to be a real
treat, a gem of a screenplay. If you crave
originality like I do, then this is a film for
you!
