Okay, I feign ignorance. |

“Pittsburgh” is labeled as a documentary in the film fest booklet, but
is simply listed as a comedy on IMDB. Some lazy Google research showed
that the film is part documentary, part comedy (?).
I give up. I don’t want to put any more effort into this movie. It’s
over and I want to forget about it.
This film follows Jeff Goldblum as he returns to his hometown of
Pittsburgh to star in a community theatre version of “The Music Man.”
Everyone thinks he’s crazy and his manager gets upset and so forth.
The film follows the rehearsal process and the wacky happening amongst
Jeff and his friends.
Its shot like a documentary, but about half of the scenes are
obviously staged (The other half? Who knows?) Jeff Goldblum actually
did star in a version of “The Music Man,” but from what I’m told, it
bombed horribly, thanks largely to his turgid performance (This film
has a happy ending, so it now leans toward fiction). But this is
hearsay; tell me the truth if you know it, please. My brain hurts.
Amidst the confusion of fantasy and reality, one thing remains clear:
this is not a good movie.
If it’s a documentary, than it is an incredibly half-assed and lazy
documentary that consists mainly of the subjects desperately
attempting to be funny while they act like assholes the entire time.
If it’s fiction, then it is simply not funny in the least.
Whether it’s true or not, the entire thing has no direction and no
purpose. It is horribly shot and edited and nothing flows. This must
be a trademark of directors Chris Bradley and Kyle LaBrache, since
their short film that was shown before “Pittsburgh” (featuring the
same principal actors) is shot and cut just as bad.
Even at 84 minutes, it drags on and on and on to point where I
couldn’t take it anymore and wanted to get up and walk around out of
boredom. There is absolutely nothing worse than watching unfunny
comedy.
Or a boring documentary.
Or both.
