A terrifically entertaining fantasy adventure...

Gore Verbinski is a master of visuals and moods. He really knows how to fill a movie screen with tremendous energy. His last effort was 2002's thriller 'The Ring', a superb movie that generated awesome tension and excitement. Unfortunately, 'Pirates' is not as involving, but it comes pretty close.

Set in the 17th century, this is the story of a pirate, Jack Sparrow (Depp), who teams up with the daughter (played by fabulous newcomer Keira Knightley) of a governor in order to stop evil pirates, who are trying to reverse an ancient curse that leaves them stuck between life and death, with the light of the moon revealing their skeletons.

I found myself drifting from my suspension of disbelief from time to time. I knew I was watching a movie, and that can be a big problem when watching a fantasy adventure. But, generally, the film is so damn entertaining that you can forgive the occasional lapse.

Johnny Depp is completely wacky in this performance and he will put a smile on your face whenever he is on screen. Keira Knightley is a revelation here. She might even have more screen time than anyone else... or maybe I was just looking at her more. She is a shining new star and will be heading straight to the top of the Hollywood A-List with this performance.

The film garners a recommendation because it is fun, visually spectacular and totally cool to watch. This is one of those rare popcorn movies that manages to overcome its innate silliness. These Pirates are pretty damn entertaining!
