Tatum O'Neal's only decent performance wins an
Oscar!
I've always
been a big fan of this film by Peter Bogdanovich
and featuring the father/daughter team of Ryan
and Tatum O'Neal. Tatum O'Neal and Madeline Kahn
won Oscars for their performances here, and the
film also captured Oscars for its screenplay and
sound.
The film centers around a con-man (Ryan O'Neal)
who tries to survive during the Depression Era
by selling Holy Bibles to those who have just
lost loved ones. While the elder O'Neal does a
nice job here, it is clearly Tatum's show.
This film is truly a classic, with beautiful
black and white camera work...oh my, it's
stunning to this day. Every aspect of this
film's technical features worked for me...from
costumes to set design to sound to music.
Bogdanovich's direction is stellar, and he
clearly maximizes his cast. Kahn is wonderful in
a supporting role, however, her screen time is a
bit too minimal for my liking.
This film...it just always makes me smile. It
has a simple humanity to it...a warmth...a
sincerity...that is so often missing in films
today. If you've never seen "Paper Moon," I
strongly suggest you rent it.
