This Heath
Ledger film is an amazing disappointment, with
sub-par writing and direction by Brian Helgeland
and generally sloppy performances by all except
Mark Addy in a supporting role. Shannyn Sossaman
turns in a remarkably irritating performance,
and Ledger turns in a Dylanesque performance of
mumbling and stumbling about in his role as a
priest. I am very into films along this
theme...and I tend to love films set in "old
religious" production settings...yet, everything
about this film seems to ring untrue and there's
an amazing lack of tension throughout the film.
The film was known to be delayed following
laughter at special effects & lighting...It's
hard to believe they improved these items as
they were both laughably bad in the final
production.
You may also see this film under "The Sin
Eater"...which gives you a much clearer picture
of what it's all about. Regardless, there's
nothing special about this film and I can't
recommend it.
