No place to run. No reasons to hide. |

| I was
scared that the western had fianlly died. I was scared that one of the
grandest genres ever had faded away. But it has returned in a blaze of
glory. And to think that it was, of all people, Kevin Costner who did
it. "Open Range" is about a group of cowboys who are attacked by the
boss of a town because he "doesn't approve of free-rangers." Soon, one
of them is dead and another gravely injured. They swear revenge and
head to town. "Open Range" follows the same style as most westerns. A
slow, steady beginning, followed by a fast-paced, action packed climax
where everyone dies. The climax in "Open Range" is the second best
climax in western history (the first being the stand-off in "The Good,
the Bad and the Ugly"). It is a brilliant study of men under fire. Up
until the climax, it is a decent western, but the climax is so great,
so gritty, so real, and so brilliant, that the entire film is painted
in a better light. Costner has now slightly redeemed himself in my
eyes. |
