A
90-minute comedy sketch
This is a
generally goofy, lightweight comedy based on the
SNL sketch and starring Will Ferrell and Chris
Kattan. Ferrell seems always willing and able to
completely commit himself to the goofiest of
roles, and it is that complete abandon that is
at work here. Kattan, too, has a sort of goofy
charm that comes off well here. They are
supported by an eclectic cast that includes
Molly Shannon, Richard Grieco, Dan Hedaya and
Michael Clarke Duncan. There's even an
appearance here by Loni Anderson...what a fun
cast. The film, a parody of Disco life, is
simple and fairly close to moronic...yet, on a
comedic level it works most of the time. It
works far better than most SNL based films that
are derived from sketches. (ie, "It's Pat" and
"Superstar"). Ferrell and Kattan both get
writing credits here, and that's a good thing.
Both having played these characters, I think
their involvement in writing the script allowed
them input into what actually worked. Generally,
the script does work.Overall, this is a
harmless, fun film for rental. It's definitely
not for everyone...a fondness for silliness or
the 70's would help a lot. Ferrell fans are
likely to be relatively pleased here, though
it's certainly not up to the quality of his
later films.
