What
did I just watch?
There is a
big plausibility issue with this film... it
doesn't have any!!! No stupid murdering
teenagers are this meticulous and knowledgeable
about crimes and investigations... no cops are
this intuitive that they can stare plain
evidence in the face and disbelieve it... no
police procedural can have this many 2+2's equal
5. This film presumes that its audience is dumb
and forgiving of loop holes. Perhaps that
presumption is correct... most people are dumb.
I, however, am not, and saw right through every
hole that this plot served up.
It is becoming an all too familiar trend in
Hollywood that there are no likeable characters
in any given movie. A film MUST have a
protagonist... someone we root for, or care
about, or have interest in to some degree. This
routine cop drama doesn't really have that
character, and thus prevents us from caring one
iota about these people.
What the hell was up with all the homoerotic
tension between the two teen killers? It didn't
go anywhere or serve a purpose. It wasn't
explained at all. I am just amazed the two
'Columbine' kids didn't start making out at some
point. It was absolutely pointless and creepy.
I cringed with disgust at the climax when our
'hero' cop goes in without any backup whatsoever
to find the two killers in the remote cliff-side
house. Then she confidently tells one of them to
precariously place the loaded gun next to the
evil killer just within arms reach. For the love
of God... this film should have been called
'Murder by Clichés'. I almost puked from
laughing so hard at the ridiculous conclusion.
The tension never really comes to a boil in this
thriller that lacks any surprises whatsoever. By
the way, did anyone notice that Sandra Bullock
was MIA for a few years? She seemed to go from
the 'HOT' list to the 'NOT' list overnight. Come
to think of it, I can't name three great Sandra
Bullock films off the top of my head... can you?
I guess I understand why she disappeared now.
