Dolly want a cracker?
This
story revolves around a young woman named May,
who grew up with a lazy eye and made no friends.
Her only companion throughout her life has been
a doll, encased in glass, which was given to her
by her coldhearted mother. May is the definition
of a lonely and awkward young woman. She is
skittish and shy and very weird.
May works in an animal hospital and is
constantly being hit upon by the sex-crazed
secretary. May also starts a flirtatious and
seemingly innocent infatuation with a local boy
and his lovely hands. The relationships evolve
and we start to see the results of the damage
done to May over the years. The extreme
loneliness and isolation have made her a
desperate and sad figure.
I like the way the film doesn't shirk the course
of events by traveling down the standard
Hollywood path. It is a brave film that never
cheats it's audience. I didn't feel that the
film was believable... it plays more like a
fable. Perhaps the film is a little confused and
muddled though. I never knew what to feel. Is it
a dark comedy? Is it a tragedy? Is it a
character study? I liked the film, but I don't
think I'll ever feel the need to revisit it.
I do think that the performance by Angela Bettis
deserves a lot of praise... she carries the
entire success of the film on her shoulders. I
give this film a mild recommendation!
