Just
as good as the original...
I
readily admit that I am not one of those
'Matrix' fanatics who worship the original and
embrace the multifaceted and seemingly deep
pseudo-philosophy of that 1999 cult classic. I
thought it was merely a decent film with novel
special effects and an original plot. Four years
later, we have been delivered two sequels within
five months of each other. 'The Matrix Reloaded'
released now & 'The Matrix Revolutions' this
fall will round out the over-popular trilogy
trend that has plagued us over the past
half-decade. Surprisingly, 'Reloaded' is more
compelling than the original even though there
is a mild 'been there done that' feel. The
stunts are smoother and the effects, although
slightly repetitive, are supremely well done. I
think the individual scenes are grander and more
spectacular in this installment and create a
sense of awe that was lacking in the first film.
The one unfortunate flaw in 'Reloaded' is that
it fails as a stand alone film. The story would
be incomprehensible to anyone who missed the
first film, and the ending is a 'to be
continued' cliffhanger that just infuriates the
hell out of the viewer.
Reeves, Moss & Fishburne all repeat their roles
and do fine jobs, especially in the lengthy and
somewhat snicker-inducing philosophical
monologues that are littered throughout. They
are joined by Pinkett and the resplendent
Bellucci who fill out the cast admirably. This
film feels more fleshed out than the first which
gives the viewer more to chew on. It is a more
mature film.
Those who loved the first will assuredly love
this too. I think it is a better film and will
be fully appreciated after 'Revolutions' hits
multiplexes this September.
