The fight for the future begins. |

| Opening
against "Star Wars Episode I," things looked pretty grim for this
rather obscure and bizarre action film. Well, the rest is history.
"Episode I" was one of the great disappointments of all time, and "The
Matrix" changed the way we look at movies. Whether that is a good
thing or a bad thing, we need more time to tell, but at this point in
history, it was all worth it for the truly unique and original thrills
that "The Matrix" offers. Basing the film's style on Hong Kong action
films, Japanese anime, and comic books, the Wachowski brothers have
created the most explosive episode of "The Twilight Zone" ever seen.
The screenplay is trippy and mind-bending, using philosophy and story
archetypes to tell a story that is unlike anything ever seen before.
The action is among the first to use slow motion effectively, not only
because it looks cool (the sole reason for it's use in so many other
films), but because it is the only way to display the amazing martial
arts and gunplay that the actors themselves had to learn for the
roles. Speaking of the actors, they are the weak links in the film:
stiff, boring, and completely forgettable. "The Matrix" did win four
Academy Awards, was blamed for a school shooting, and changed our
culture in the same way that "Star Wars" did 30 years ago |

TC Candler's Comment
This is
solid enough entertainment with an original and
intriguing plot. But the effects everyone has
been so gung ho about draw a little too much
attention to themselves...
this film tries too damn hard to be cool rather
than just being cool. Not bad... not
great, but it should hold up on repeat viewings
and will probably garner a cult following.
