An elusive bird...

A friend suggested that I catch up on one of the true classics of cinema that had eluded me over the years... "The Maltese Falcon".

This noir mystery consistently intrigues and entertains with its characters playing head games on one another and verbally jousting with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Humphrey Bogart's Detective Sam Spade has some of the wittiest lines of any movie from that era.

The film has Detective Spade solving murders, dodging crooks, flirting with women, eluding the cops, and dealing with the bad guys all in relation to a mysterious black bird whose value seems to increase with each character's desire to possess it.

I really enjoyed everything about this well written and conivingly constructed movie. It never reveals too much but always dangles another carrot for us to chew on.

This is a deserved classic and I highly recommend it to anyone who, like me, has let it fall by the wayside over the years.

Richard Propes' Comment

I highly recommend this John Huston directed classic based on a Dashiell Hammett novel involving the detective Sam Spade. Humphrey Bogart is wonderful as Sam Spade, with Oscar nominated support by Sydney Greenstreet. The film also received Oscar nominations for Best Picture and screenplay. It was inducted into the National Film Registry in 1989. This film is one of the truly classic detective films. Definitely a must-see for detective movie fans!
