Jennifer Lopez Continues Her Collapse...

This drivel is as contrived and stale as any romantic comedy in recent memory. The film is a Pretty Woman wannabe without any of the charm or wit that made the Julia Roberts classic so memorable. The chemistry between Lopez and Fiennes, which is so essential to the success of any on screen romance, fizzles into nothingness as it passes in one eye and out the other.

When one uses such a tried and true formula as the 'romantic comedy', it is a necessity that the script be fresh and witty so we can distinguish it from the countless hoards that preceded it in the genre. Maid in Manhattan not only fails to be original in any way at all, but actually rehashes all the standard and least funny aspects of the genre. I guarantee that viewers won't be surprised even once during the overlong running time.

Jennifer Lopez is fast becoming as big a punch-line on the silver screen as her personal life already is off the screen. Films like Enough, The Cell, The Wedding Planner & this latest effort are solidifying her as a media creation rather than a truly talented actress. She has about as much personality on screen as sawdust. NEXT!

What is Ralph Fiennes doing here? This is a truly magnificent actor who has been at the top of his profession for a long time now. I can only assume that he and his agent decided it was time to sell out and try a piece of fluff for a big fat paycheck.

One of these things is not like the other... Schindler's List - The English Patient - Quiz Show - Oscar & Lucinda - End of the Affair - Maid in Manhattan.

My face hurt from frowning for two hours after leaving the theatre. I think I can count the number of smiles and chuckles to be had in this stale film on one hand... what a stunning bore!

I am dreading the inevitable display of indiscernible acting talent that will assuredly be forthcoming when JLo and her new fiancé, Ben Affleck, hit the screen together for the first time as a couple. Maybe it will be a period piece about 17th century shipbuilding... they could call it 'Wooden Planks'. (ADDENDUM TO THIS PARAGRAPH -- IT TURNS OUT THAT THE MOVIE WAS CALLED GIGLI)

Richard Propes' Comment

It's a powerful testimony to the acting of Ralph Fiennes that he can make this film even remotely watchable. I had to chuckle with Jacob's line, because it's true. During the entire film, Fiennes has this look on his face like 'Why the heck am I here?" ANSWER: This is your money pic, Ralph. Don't worry, we'll forgive you. Just don't do a film with JLO again.

Jacob Hall's Comment

I really like romantic comedies. Laugh all you want, but "Notting Hill" is fantastic.

"Maid in Manhattan" is an example of a bad romantic comedy, though. A very weak story, weak characters, unfunny humor, and a total lack of interesting traits in the cast.

Jennifer Lopez is a truly awful actress and this does nothing more than confirm this. She stars a maid who falls in love with a politician (Ralph Fiennes, wearing a "why the hell am I making this?" look).

So incredibly dry, I felt like drinking a pool when I finished viewing. This is saved from a D by Ralph Fiennes, who always gets points from me.
