Lives up to its title...
This
small production is a really observant film
about the mother-daughter bond, body image,
sisterhood, friendship, dating, insecurity, and
marriage. Magnificent performances from the
entire cast and one of the wittiest scripts of
the year makes this a treasure that is worth
seeking out in place of the barrage of big
budget schlock that is so prevalent this year.

This film addresses issues that bring to mind my
lovely, dazzling and intelligent Goddaughter.
Victoria is a 12-year-old dazzler, and I find
myself in constant worry that she will be
corrupted by so much of the crap that permeates
society, the media and the arts.
This film is a reminder that there is still
hope. The film beautifully addresses the issues
of self-esteem, self-image, insecurity and the
parent/child relationship...and it does so in a
refreshingly honest but still hopeful way.
Featuring outstanding performances by Catherine
Keener, Emily Mortimer, Brenda Blethyn and Raven
Goodwin, this film features incredible writing
and directing...both by Nicole
Holofcener. There's also a nice appearance here
by Jake Gyllenhaal.
The film, while hopeful, rings true...this is
not just a happy family...but a real one with
real problems and real issues and real
conflicts.
If I have one wish for my Goddaughter it is that
she grow up realizing that she is truly "lovely
& amazing," and that each step of the
way...regardless of her life experiences or
challenges or obstacles she doesn't lose any of
these qualities. This film is a reminder, to me,
of all that is lovely and amazing about life and
love and friendship and family.
