Another cute Meg Ryan film...

Forget, for a moment, that she is a great dramatic actress, Meg Ryan does this type of material better than anyone ever has or probably ever will. She is as lovely now as she was 15 years ago. The reason these Meg Ryan movies work is because every guy thinks of her as the perfect girlfriend, and every girl sees herself represented in her eyes.

This is a charming film, filled with goodness, kindness and unabashed romance. There are too few of those movies out there.

Of course a massive suspension of disbelief is necessary in order to enjoy this film... but I had no trouble giving myself over to the plot, in large part due to the charms and charisma of the two leads. Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman are perfectly cast.

This is one of the best date movies of 2001!

I loved that, even though he is the 19th century Duke thrust forward in time, she is the one blown away by the differences, the manners, the intelligence, the wit, the honesty, and the integrity. This film could easily have fallen into the trap of laughing constantly at his misunderstandings... a lesser film would have ignored his impact on those around him.
