You know whether you'll like it before you go in...

Enjoying this film depends heavily on your opinion of lead actress Lindsay Lohan.  Some films lean so far in one direction that they leave only one angle of approach.  One could argue that "Just My Luck" is a teeny-bopper fantasy romance with a plot twist rivalling the body-switching "Freaky Friday" movies.  One could also claim that it is a sugary young-love fairytale with about as much depth as a kiddie pool.

However, it is on neither of those two levels that most people will enjoy this film.  The only way you'll enjoy this film is if you find Lohan to be a charming and beautiful young woman.  You have to know, in advance, that you'd enjoy watching her bounce from one energetic scene to another, for almost two hours, while changing designer outfits more often than she flashes her perfect smile.  If you don't know that before going in, the chances are that you will chuck this film on the "ones-to-forget" pile.

I am a self-admitted Lohan junkie.  I think she is just about the most gorgeous creature on the planet right now and she has more cinematic charm than Meg Ryan, Audrey Hepburn and Julia Roberts in their combined heydays.  I've like every film she's been in up to this point... something I cannot say about any other working thespian today.  She smiles, I smile... it is that simple.

So with that admission aside, let me say that I enjoyed this contrived little film just enough to give it a recommendation.  Sure, it has flaws... many of them.  It features some crappy music.  It is entirely unbelievable.  It follows formula from credits to credits.  There are no surprises.  But it is charming and energetic and about 95% of it consists of Lindsay delivering silly lines with that now familiar cracked intonation of hers.

I must concede that this is not her best film... in fact, it may be her worst.  I am probably never going to want to watch the film ever again.  I am far more excited about her upcoming films, which include some more weighty material with some great actors and directors.  "Just My Luck" is a cheesy film that I liked simply because of Lindsay.  I have no other defense for this grade... nor do I need one.
