This film misses the cut...

Set in New York City, this film revolves around an English professor, Franny Thorsten (Meg Ryan), who has an erotic affair with a police detective (Mark Ruffalo) while he is investigating a murder where she may be a key witness.

The film is a blurry mess with an unnatural script and a tedious plot. Meg Ryan and Mark Ruffalo do the best they can, but can't overcome the ineptness of the material. 'In the Cut' is a dark, dank, depressing mishmash of dysfunctional romance and murder mystery. Even Meg Ryan's overt attempt to play against her usual typecasting is a bore to watch. This film gets almost everything wrong. Avoid this film until it can be viewed for free, and even then, I would advise having an alternate diversion to keep you awake.
