Amusing but cocky...
I
will definitely concede that this script is one
of the smartest and wittiest of the year... each
line and each scene exudes a pretentiously hard
& biting tone of sarcasm that has no room for
forgiveness or kindness or sympathy.
Unfortunately, this film makes the mistake of
creating characters that are equally
unsympathetic. You'll have no room in your heart
for any one in this film... and that makes it
very hard to like 'Igby Goes Down'.
Every now and then, I run into a film, like this
one, that I would have liked if it hadn't tried
so hard to be such a smart-ass. There are too
many winks and nods to the audience saying,
'look how smart and offbeat and quirky we can
be'... a film should just be what it is without
trying to tell me what it is.
I think the words that spew from these
character's mouths are too mature and
intelligent and sophisticated, considering their
source. Some films can be too clever for their
own good. I get the distinct impression that
this story would translate more successfully to
it's audience as a book.
