TC Candler's Review

Rose Byrne and Romola Garai are New Stars...

This film was one of those gorgeous little surprises, completely ignored by audiences at the box office despite a smattering of critical acclaim. I loved the performances of Romola Garai and Rose Byrne, two insanely beautiful young actresses with tremendous talent. Watch for them both over the next few years! I was also very impressed with the romantic and wistful screenplay guided by a poetic narration from the main character. The English countryside is photographed as a lush green paradise that makes you long to get away from the city. And the score is haunting and melodic. This film gets an easy recommendation and will be a favorite for fans of Merchant Ivory productions.

I also have to point out the most egregious MPAA rating I have ever bared witness to. They rated this film R because of a momentary shot of a topless woman. The actual rating should be G, as its most loyal audience will be younger girls. This is a fine family film and the MPAA should be ashamed of themselves yet again for such a blatant mistake. Every other country in the world released this film so that its youngest audiences would be allowed to attend.
