Hudson + Anyone = Good Chemistry

Andie Anderson (Hudson) is a brilliant young writer who is stuck writing fluff pieces about romance and dating for a prominent woman's magazine. She is commissioned to do a piece about 'How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days' by doing all the things that women typically do wrong in a relationship. Ben Barry (McConaughey) is an ad-exec who makes a wager with his co-workers that he can get Andie to fall in love with him in ten days.

There are typically about five or ten of these paint-by-numbers romantic comedies released each year. Unfortunately only one or two of them are ever remotely memorable. This particular effort is recommendable primarily because of the charm exuded by both leads. Kate Hudson is without question the successor to Meg Ryan's throne as the queen of romantic comedies, and Matthew McConaughey has finally found a role where his goofy southern charm doesn't work against him. Hudson, looking obscenely gorgeous yet again, really carries this film with a performance that will get overlooked because of the slapstick nature of the role. It takes real talent to be that adorable.

Okay... so the plot is as contrived as they come, but the jokes are all well timed and fresh. The romance, although not remotely profound, is cute and believable... this is a fun couple to spend two hours with.

The obligatory happy ending is delayed a little too long. I think twenty minutes could have been trimmed from the running length... there are a few flat spots that will induce some glances at your wristwatch before we get to the falling-in-love scenes. But, overall, this film will provide most of what you'll expect from it. There are enough laughs and enough fluffy romantic scenes to make this a passable date movie.
