Sad Decline...
A
magnificent performance by Gillian Anderson does
enough to elevate this rather slow Edith Wharton
adaptation. The first two thirds of the movie is
bogged down by weighty and overlong
conversations that serve as exposition rather
than witty dialogue. However, the ending is
powerful and rather devastating as we watch the
final stages of demise in the life of Lily Bart.
It is too long in coming, but the reward is
deserving of a recommendation.
If you like Merchant Ivory productions... then
this film will suit your taste.
