"Hostage" is a solid thriller that is like a
combination of "Die Hard" and "Panic Room." It
features a role perfect for it's star, Bruce
Willis, and several impressive sequences.
The story is this: Willis is a small town cop
who must negotiate a hostage situation. Three
teens have taken a rich family hostage in their
advanced home. The plot thickens. It seems that
someone has kidnapped Willis' family, and unless
he retrieves a disk in the house, they will kill
them. Ouch.
Although it's no "Die Hard," "Hostage" provides
a fair number of thrills. The direction is
top-notch. The cinematography captures the dark
tone of the film well, and for the first time in
a long time, the action is not edited like a
music video. The problems lie within the script,
which starts off great, but becomes a little
generic by the final act. That's okay. Willis is
in top form, once again playing an action hero
who feels real. Willis gets a few chances to
really act in the film, and he responds
admirably.
Top it off with an extraordinarily impressive
credit sequence, and you have a great, serious,
gritty thriller that is good, bloody fun.

Far better
than the similarly themed "Assault on Precinct
13" from earlier this year.
