A Mother and Daughter
(Weaver and Hewitt) con team work together in their attempts to marry
and divorce rich bachelors in order to set them up through infidelity.
The ensuing settlements provide them with a hefty bankroll, but when
the IRS seemingly takes them for back taxes, they must look for one
big final score. Their target is the tobacco tycoon (Hackman) who
teeters on the edge of life and death with every cigarette. However,
an ex husband seeks to rekindle his relationship with the mother, and
subsequently tracks them down. His unexpected appearance and the
daughter's new found love interest hinder the plans.
The plot is entertaining enough to carry the running length. Each
scene is fresh and well timed. Hewitt, Weaver and Liotta all seem to
have good comic timing throughout and show genuine chemistry. The
situations these people find themselves in, although sometimes
ludicrous, are very amusing and often produce laugh out loud moments.
The direction is simple enough, with no real effort to create
beautiful scenes or 'high art.' After all this is a comedy and all
that is required of the director is to keep the laughs coming at a
steady pace. Most of the directing took place in the editing room for
this one. One thing the director does make sure of is to have Jennifer
Love Hewitt and her pronounced 'talents' on screen as much as is
possible without reverting to blatant nudity. These goes under the
'What Works' section because it really really does work... for me.
Gene Hackman plays the smoke billowing millionaire in what is really a
one joke act that plays itself out within a scene or two. There is no
depth to his character and as a result it happens to be the worst role
I've seen him play ever. The way he ends up is quite unflattering to
him but then again so is the script. The biggest problem with this
film is the extraordinary leaps the plot takes. We go from casual
dating to marriage in a few short days a number of times. One
character agrees to marry without actually knowing the others full
name. They kiss, they marry - it's just that simple.
I think this is the type of film that most people will forget rather
quickly. It does, however, provide 2 hours of mild entertainment, with
a number of decent laughs. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way
to see it, but if it ends up on USA or TBS one afternoon and you are
bored... give it a try. |
