Oh
Deary Me...
'The
Guru' is pure and utter silliness. But
sometimes, no matter how ludicrous a film gets,
you just have to be grateful that a movie can
put a smile on your face for a couple of hours.
This colorful film isn't hilarious, but it is
constantly amusing in a light-hearted and goofy
way. I am smiling just thinking about it!
Jimi Mistry plays Ramu Gupta, an Indian
immigrant who wants to make it big in America.
In his search for an job, he stumbles across a
porn set and lands an acting gig as a native who
seduces a beautiful girl on a beach.
Unfortunately for 'Rammy', as he is nicknamed,
he has trouble generating 'wood'. After his
failed venture into porno, he befriends his
co-star Sharonna (Heather Graham) and starts to
fall in love with her. Meanwhile, he is slowly
gaining a reputation in New York as a sexual
Guru, even though he has very little experience
on the subject. His girlfriend, Lexi (Marisa
Tomei), is obsessed with his supposed
philosophies and helps him spread the word of
enlightenment to all her friends and even helps
him get a gig on Broadway. The love triangle
ensues, the lies are exposed, the relationships
form, and we occasionally get a 'Bollywood'
style musical number to act as an interlude.
It is all a ton of nonsensical fun. Mistry is a
sympathetic lead character and does a good job
of acting naive throughout. Heather Graham
steals the show with a sexy and energetic turn
as the porn star with a heart of gold. Graham
has a nifty little gift of being able to
brighten a screen whenever she is on it. When
she smiles, I smile. She is underrated in
Hollywood because she has done a few fluffy
movies. But when she is good... she is really
good. Marisa Tomei also delivers a memorable
character and rounds out a cast that seems to be
having lots of fun.
I recommend this film for anyone who wants a
face-ache from smiling for ninety minutes. 'The
Guru' is inconsequential and silly, but that is
part of the reason it works.

This film
is far from an award-winning film, and certainly
has many challenges...yet it overcomes them with
a sense of silliness, performances that are
convicted within their silliness and winning
cinematography and music. For a lighthearted
comedy and a few chuckles along the way, I have
to recommend this film.
