There's a
basic rule...if you wish to go for convincing
camp or a convincing "creature" film you don't
cast Matthew Broderick in a lead role. He simply
is not capable of pulling off this kind of
performance...I love Broderick, but he
definitely has limitations as an actor. This
kind of acting is one of them. He's not helped
by a script that has the pizzazz and wit of a
tampon commercial. There's also Jean Reno here,
and Hank Azaria. Azaria, actually might have
been a solid choice for the lead role. I've
always felt he is an underrated actor and he's
proven to have the ability to do sensitive but
campy...that would have worked here. I didn't
find the creature very believable, but I've
never found this creature that believable.
There's a few bonus points for the "Siskel and
Ebert" slam within the script...it's a cute
touch. Otherwise, only Godzilla fans should
really spend time with this film.
